Secretary’s Report:

Ancient Universities Golf Match

The 79th Scottish Ancient Universities match took place on Sunday8th & Monday 9th April 2018.

We met at Edzell and welcomed St Andrews back in to the fold after a long absence, (20 years??),we eyed St Andrews single handicappers up and down, and quickly decided on a rule change to take handicaps into account for the first time. The draw paired Glasgow against the might of st Andrews, and Aberdeen against Edinburgh.

Day 1 result: Glasgow 5 v1 st Andrews , and edin 3.5 v 2.5 aberdeen.

After a fine days golf we retired to The Burn for dinner, a few wee drams, and sat back and watched The masters of TV to see how it should be done.

Day 2 took place at royal Montrose where the final was played between the unlikely winners of the previous day: Glasgow and Edinburgh

In a close contest the match score was 3 games each. Number of holes won was then taken in to account which made Edinburgh the winners, and Glasgow runners up. The other match went to Aberdeen leaving St Andrews with the dubious honour of taking the ‘nut’ trophy home.

Glasgow team: Ian Salt (Captain), Alistair Gracie, Chris Taylor, Neil Bulleid, Ian Reid, and Gordon Lindsay.

Senate Match

The Senate Match was played on Friday 8th June 2018 at Glasgow Gailes.

The match was played on a glorious sunny day and was well represented by both teams, with 11 matches taking place. Despite our best efforts we were overrun by a formidable Aberdeen team. Glasgow 3.5 vs Aberdeen 7.5

A couple of Glasgow Highlights were Laurie Hunter taking part again, and it was great to see Laurie, …and the honourable secretary holing his 2nd shot at the par 4 1st hole from 110 yards with a wedge.

Glasgow team : Iain Thayne (Captain), Bernie Hoey, Alistair Bonnington, John Oliver, Ian Salt, Anne Terry, Anne Cumberland, Sean McKee, Hugh Elder, Chris Taylor, and Laurie Hunter.

Huge thanks go to the 2 Captains – our very own Iain Thayne and Aberdeen captain Jamie weir who did a great job bringing the event together, and also John Oliver for his help arranging gailes both for the senate match and the staff outing.

East v West

The match was played at Glen Bervie on Tuesday 28th August 2018.

Glasgow went with a depleted team, 2 men less than our opponents, and we were soon found out.

Beat 4-0 in the morning, and 6-2 in the afternoon.

Thanks to Ian Gardner and Bob Lamb who played the 2 rounds for the cause despite being far from full fitness, and special mention to David Still for winning some points for Glasgow.

Result: Edinburgh 10 v 2 David Still

Team: Chris Taylor, Anne Terry, David Still, Bob Lamb, Ian Gardner and Ian Reid.

Thanks to Duncan for his usual smooth running of the event.
